Imogen Sinclair
Based in Manchester, Imogen Sinclair has been drawing for as long as she can remember, developing a practice rooted in intuition, reflection and play. After graduating from university in Brighton in 2020, she began working professionally as an illustrator, building a visual language that reflects both her inner landscape and a longstanding connection to nature. Her work shifts as she does, responding to changes in thought, environment and experience rather than following a fixed set of themes.
Imogen’s artistic process begins simply, with pencil in a sketchbook. She draws without a clear intention at first, allowing meaning to surface gradually as the work develops. From there, she moves into digital processes, where the image is refined and brought together. This openness is central to her way of working. “I like to draw without the restraint of knowing what I am trying to say to begin with,” she explains, trusting time and repetition to reveal what the work wants to become.
Material Shifts
Colour plays a central role in Imogen’s work, functioning as a tool for expression, experimentation and emotional clarity. Drawn instinctively to bold and expressive palettes, she uses colour as a way to play, explore and communicate feeling. Alongside her primarily digital practice, she has recently begun experimenting with clay and natural materials, prompted by an artist residency in 2025 where she found herself increasingly drawn to working with her hands.
This shift marks an important moment in her practice. Moving from digital illustration towards a more tactile process has been both challenging and energising, opening up new ways of thinking about material, form and time. While these explorations are still in their early stages, they signal a growing interest in how physical making can sit alongside drawing, and how new materials might shape the next phase of her work. As Imogen puts it, her practice remains a work in progress – always evolving, always responsive.
