Laura Short

Laura Short’s work combines the timeless charm of analogue photography with an affinity for natural and historical settings. Based in Aarhus, Denmark, with roots in England and the Netherlands, Laura’s work balances nostalgia with a fresh perspective, capturing life’s fleeting, intimate moments. Her images often centre on scenes that feel like paused moments: a breakfast recently enjoyed or freshly washed dishes. Another recurring motive is the century-old art of topiary, a tradition dating back to the romans. Nature also finds a steady presence in her work; Laura is drawn to verdant landscapes, especially lush gardens, and trees she describes as wrapping around you “like a warm scarf in winter.”

Currently working in art direction, Laura creates tactile compositions that highlight texture and form. With her analogue camera as her primary companion, she manages the entire process from shooting to development, establishing a personal connection to each image.

Nature and Traces of Life

Laura’s inspirations span places and styles, from Italian architecture by Carlo Scarpa to the quintessentially English gardens of Great Dixter. Having lived across Europe, she treasures influences from each place she has called home, including the use of light by Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals and an admiration for Arne Jacobsen’s architecture in Denmark, particularly the Town Hall in Aarhus, where she got married.

“As a photographer, my eyes are always ‘on’, viewing the world through a unique frame – sometimes just in my mind, sometimes through the lens. Everything I see becomes a potential photograph, though occasionally I must watch the moment pass when I spot the perfect shot but don’t have my gear with me.”

A self-described lover of colour, especially green, Laura’s imagery draws from her fascination with the Arts and Crafts movement and a respect for the beauty found in everyday life. When she’s not working, she spends her time with family, often collecting treasures from nature, visiting galleries or creating art with her two children.
