A Language of Movement
Nassim Azarzar’s work embodies the fluidity of identities and cultures, shaped by his upbringing in Épinay-sur-Seine, a Parisian suburb with a rich and complex tapestry of diasporic influences. Nassim’s early environment was marked by contrasts – celebrating diversity while navigating the tension of cultural assimilation. In 2013, he relocated to Morocco, his family’s homeland, to engage more deeply with his roots. This transition, though challenging, became the foundation for a multidisciplinary practice that weaves together painting, sculpture, experimental cinema, poetry and sound. From his studio in Rabat overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Nassim draws on these varied influences to explore themes of displacement, movement and belonging.
Stories in Flux
At the heart of Nassim’s practice lies an exploration of “decor” as a narrative framework – layered, modular and ever-evolving. His work transforms ordinary materials and spaces into immersive environments, merging visual, auditory and textual elements to tell stories of diaspora and identity negotiation. Moroccan transport trucks, with their vivid ornamentation and symbolic movement, serve as recurring motifs, reflecting the ongoing exchange between cultures and histories. “These vehicles are more than a means of transportation,” Nassim explains. “They’re stories in motion, challenging fixed narratives while embracing complexity.”
Colour plays a crucial role in Nassim’s work, informed by the vernacular aesthetics of Moroccan streets, marketplaces and urban life. He incorporates traditional materials like paint and ink alongside ephemeral elements, including recorded voices and ambient sounds. The result is a body of work that thrives on improvisation, much like the “Moderne Jazz Collective” painters who inspire him. Through his multidisciplinary approach, Nassim Azarzar creates art that refuses static interpretation – dynamic and deeply connected to the stories and spaces that surround him.
