The Dazed Collection

A vacant gaze, a quiet unease – The Dazed Collection is a series of peculiar women shaped through layering, revision and instinct. Stine Belden Røed’s figures exist in a space between melancholy and resilience, their wide, unblinking eyes absorbing the world around them. Though still, they seem to hold onto something unspoken, their expressions suspended in quiet ambiguity.

Each piece in the collection is drawn with a simplicity that belies its complexity. What appears effortless is the result of careful reworking, where erased layers remain faintly visible, giving depth to every line.

These works take inspiration from early vintage mugshots of women—fleeting records of unknown stories, faces forever captured in a moment of uncertainty. These women seem uncanny and normal as if they are performing the act of being fine. Some retreat into small gestures of beauty, surrounding themselves with flowers or wearing a carefully placed bow, objects that hint at routine and control amidst unpredictability.

Pencils and watercolour on paper create a soft, textured foundation, later refined digitally but never losing the rawness of hand-drawn imperfection. Colours are muted yet deliberate, with blue and orange recurring alongside tones of plum and green.

The Dazed Collection exists in this in-between state – subtle yet striking, simple yet layered – offering a moment to pause, look back, and wonder.
