Mainly using acrylic and oil on canvas, she returns to flowers, animals and landscapes, her recent large flower forms likening blooms to children. About Vera Mattmann

Based in Lucerne, Switzerland, Vera Mattmann creates vivid and emotive works that delve into profound themes such as motherhood, connection, growth and love. Working primarily with acrylic and oil on canvas, her art recurrently incorporates natural motifs, with vibrant flowers, animals and landscapes gracing her compositions. Her latest works feature large, bold flower forms, their thick stems resembling tree trunks that highlight Vera’s fascination with translating the human experience into representations of organic beauty. “The flowers remind me of children – each one is unique,” she explains.

Originally trained as a graphic designer and documentary filmmaker, Vera has always found painting to be her truest calling, though she enjoys creating small ceramic sculptures when time allows. Her creative process is quick and intuitive, often resulting in finished pieces within a day or two. “My inspiration comes from the emotions I experience, with the subjects arising from deep within me,” Vera shares, citing contemporary female painters such as Miriam Cahn, Christina Quarles and Emma Kohlmann as influences, whose works explore themes of gender and identity, not unlike her own artistic journey.

Maternal Reflections

Vera’s recent work engages deeply with the theme of motherhood, as she examines her experiences with postnatal depression and the complexities of nurturing new life on canvas. Her work candidly captures the conflicting emotions of sadness and hope, employing striking forms in textured, vivid hues that reflect this delicate balance.

Sharing a studio with her musician partner, Vera also finds inspiration in the interplay of family life and artistic practice. The studio is a creative space where music and painting converge, even if the romantic idea of creating art while her children play remains elusive for now. Bright colours and bold compositions are hallmarks of her style, as she embraces the challenge of harmonising contrasting hues to craft a vibrant, expressive visual language. Her art not only reflects the emotional intensity she explores, but also invites the viewer to connect with these universal themes, bridging the personal and the shared in a selection of beautiful art prints.
