Katsushika Hokusai, Great Wave Off Kanagawa

Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist and printmaker of the Edo Period and is considered to be one of the outstanding figures of the Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world” (everyday life), school of printmaking.

Great Wave of Kanagawa” is arguably one of Katsushika Hokusai’s most celebrated woodblock prints and was the first in his series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.” The print of “Great Wave off Kanagawa” was owned by artists including Monet and Van Gogh, whilst also supposedly acting as an influence for Debussy’s “La Mer”.
