Honouring the Classical, Shaped for Today

Laoru Laoru is the creative practice of Aarhus-based artist duo Jacob and Katrine Laoru. From their shared studio, they design and handcraft figurative ceramic sculptures that reinterpret classical forms for the contemporary home. Their work centres on the human figure, drawing on ancient Greek and Roman traditions to create timeless pieces grounded in craftsmanship and quiet expression.

“Our hope is to bring the experience of classical sculpture into modern interiors – where the beauty of form still has a place in daily life.”

Jacob brings over 16 years of experience working with sculpture, while Katrine’s background in interiors and lifestyle informs their shared aesthetic sensibility. Together, they work primarily with stoneware – a durable, sustainable material that recalls the tactile richness of marble, while offering a contemporary surface for experimentation.

Material and Meaning

Each object begins with a concept, but the creative process is fluid and marked by revisions, reworkings and unexpected turns. “Sometimes we end up close to the original idea. Other times, we arrive somewhere entirely new.”

While white glaze remains central to their visual language, the duo also experiments with colour to reflect the often-forgotten polychromy of classical statuary. Their approach is not nostalgic, but rooted in a desire to bring sculptural traditions into dialogue with modern Nordic interiors.

At once familiar and distinct, their works offer a tactile connection to history – evoking an appreciation for the human form as both subject and symbol.
